O'Neil, who was in her high-school years during the auditions, volunteered for Canadian Idol's 3rd season within the early months of 2005. She was able to advance to the 100th round due to the fact that judges were awed by her vocal performance. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by jury. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant drop during top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, bottom 3, and the bottom 2. The judges were shocked by this, and told the audience that Melissa was the best contestant. O'Neil wasn't in the third place again following a series of consistently outstanding performances. O'Neil and Rex Goudie and Werner presented two incredible performances in September 2005. Werner reportedly said that reports would claim that O'Neil beat Goudie and was the third Canadian Idol. She was also the first female and the youngest winner in history of the show. O'Neil was contacted immediately from Canadian PM Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
